Hirai: PS3 confused third-parties at launch
Sony man takes second honesty pill

Just a few days after SCE president Kaz Hirai admitted that the PlayStation 3 suffered a difficult opening year, Hirai has told trade magazine MCV that the console initially confused third-party publishers and developers.

“I think there was some confusion as to what PS3 was initially – some of the third parties didn’t understand and they wanted to scale back a little and see how things went before they really put in their resources,” Hirai stated.

“But when I re-positioned the PS3 as a video games console at Tokyo Game Show I think everybody got that message loud and clear.”

EA casts light on Skate's multiformat future
Sequel on the cards

Electronic Arts has confirmed that a new addition to its celebrated Skate franchise is on the cards for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, reports trade magazine MCV.

Skate 2, as we've decided to call it, will hit the two next-gen formats at some point, but - perhaps more excitingly - EA has also revealed that the original Skate will hit the Wii, with balance board functionality.

Also in development for the DS, EA said it is looking forward to bringing Skate to Nintendo's two record-selling formats.

"We knew it would be an exciting challenge to bring the soul and feel of skateboarding to the Wii and Nintendo DS," EA's Scott Blackwood said in a statement.

"With fresh new designs and gameplay components built from scratch, we've been able to, once again, capture the true experience of skateboarding in a completely innovative way."

Kojima: Edge misquoted me
Konami man not 'dissatisfied' by MGS4

Metal Gear man Hideo Kojima has disputed the notion that he is disappointed with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, claiming that he was misquoted during the interview in question.

"On the internet, there's stuff saying ‘Hideo Kojima isn't satisfied with the PS3’. I'd like to talk about that today. I just got back from Paris and did 15 interviews and everyone asked me about it, did I say that. The meaning of what I said has totally been changed, made totally different. Today, I'd like to talk about that," he stated.

"Why did it turn into that? When I'm doing an interview, I answer in Japanese, and I can't control how the writer will interpret that into English," he continued. "What I say is then translated in English, and the writer then changes that into their own words and writes that. So, right there, the meaning of what I say changes a lot."

The interview Kojima is talking about featured in Edge's May issue, in which the Konami man was quoted as stating that the power of the PlayStation 3 wasn't quite as his team had been lead to believe.

"When we first showed the game engine at Tokyo Game Show, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y’know, and we were going to work on this and that – we had so many ideas," Edge claim's Kojima stated.

"But when we actually started developing the game, we realised there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn’t to say we didn’t progress."

Of course, by denying he ever said the above, Kojima has actually encouraged websites such as this one to reprint said comments. Spot the irony?

Predictions mixed about U.S. sales in April
Will 360 top PS3, or vice versa?

It's the burning question: just which format, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, will have seen the biggest hardware boost due to the release of Grand Theft Auto IV last month?

Predictions for the official U.S. figures, set to be published by the NPD Group later this week, are coming in, and they paint a mixed picture.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has claimed that the PS3 will have outsold the Xbox 360 in April, selling 290,000 units to the 360's 275,000.

However, simExchange believes the opposite will be true, with the 360 winning out with sales of 381,000 units to the PS3's 363,000.

Both parties think the Wii will top both Sony and Microsoft, selling somewhere between 600,000 (Pachter) and 734,000 (simExchange) units.
